Some words from the Artist on this piece;

痕跡 (konseki), The journey of understanding the elemental makeup of the ceramics process has deeply informed my practice. One fascination has been the use of shells as kiln props, particularly in wood-fired kilns, to prevent vessels from sticking to the kiln shelf. The shell’s composition of calcium carbonate allows it to break down into a powder at high temperatures, which prevents it from adhering to the clay. However, it can react with silica in the clay, creating a subtle glaze effect where the shell once rested. I appreciate this echo of the shell—its presence fossilised into the vessel, leaving behind a trace of what once was.

秘める(himeru) I have come to realise that a lot of my practice tries to encapsulate an essence of fluidity and motion through a static vessel. The workshopping of oxide washes layered over my glazes has helped capture the movement that occurs in the kiln during the final firing. The glaze becomes molten and melts, moves and fuses onto the clay as it cools down. It reveals the unseen processes that go into making a vessel.

輪 (ichirin), The narrow opening of the vase allows for a single stem or a few delicate flowers to be held in the vessel. It has taken me years to perfect these narrow-apertured vases, and I appreciate their slender form, as it allows the vase itself to speak alongside the florals it may hold

燃え残り (moenokori), This faceted wood-fired vessel came from my first wood firing. Under the tutelage of Peter Phillips and George Khut, I learned the process of collecting and sorting wood, packing the kiln, and managing the firing itself. Over 32 hours, the flame worked its way through the kiln, distributing ash and leaving behind a story on each piece. What I love most about this vessel are the moments of ash accumulation against the apricot blushes of shino, reminding me of the convivial time we spent feeding the flame waiting for the pieces that emerged from its depths.

流動 (ryūdō), The beauty of ceramics lies in following the journey from beginning to end, having faith that it will turn out as it should. This faith is tested even further when using oxide washes, as you hope they will cascade and float in a way that feels almost magical. When I took this piece out of the kiln, I was completely agasp—it had captured so much of the story of the firing. There’s something beautiful about this trust in the process; it keeps you detached from the outcome, open to surprise and wonder which we all need in this life.

余燼 (yojin), The ash for this glaze was collected in the winter of 2023 from residents of the Southern Highlands. It came in response to a post in a community group, allowing me to meet a beautiful cross-section of people—a now-retired potter, a family whose son was also half-Japanese and other local families The ash isn't from a single source but a mélange of random remains: odd pieces of cardboard, stray timber, and foliage from various gardens.

偶然 (gūzen), The blue-grey glaze came about very serendipitously. It is a collation of all my glaze tests that didn't quite work out, yet from these experiments emerged a glaze I will never be able to replicate due to the randomness of glaze chemistry. I will savor it while I have it, appreciating how all those seemingly insignificant attempts can amount to something beautiful.
