Franky Frankland.

Franky Frankland (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist from Naarm/Melbourne.  They graduated with a Master of Fine Art from RMIT University in 2014. Their practice merges hand-built and wheel-thrown ceramics with a foundation in painting and drawing.

With deep reverence for this ancient landscape Franky incorporates aspects of various geological formations unique to this continent - from the basalt plains formed by ancient volcanic activity to the bands of colour found in sandstone and iron rich sedimentary rock formations.

Franky's unglazed exterior surfaces are layered, undulating and folding, carrying visible traces of human touch that capture a sense of complexity, sensitivity and quiet strength.

These surfaces are built through a range of techniques including collage, slab and coil construction.   Franky alternates between multiple clay bodies and layers of slip to build strata, resulting in both bold and subtle tonal variations.

Franky dedicates their time to making work, teaching wheel throwing, assisting to run a pottery studio and parenting their 10 year old.
