Continuation of a Dissonant Note
Continuation of a Dissonant Note is a new solo exhibition by Nathan Martin of Saturday Yard Work, exploring how process and experimentation can determine outcomes. Martins’ works play with a duality of action and reaction: setting parameters, agitating the material and allowing scope for the material itself to respond. Each resulting piece is not like any other, their unique reaction is their imprint.
Known for his use of metal and reactive finishes, here Martin extends the process to timber, where splitting, burning and combining with aluminium and custom handmade glass elements further a body of robust and organic pieces. His furniture, lighting and objects are bold, elemental and deliberately unresolved – marked with the unexpected. His work aims to challenge traditional ergonomic and spatial norms. Surfaces blister, edges fracture and materials carry the evidence of how they have been worked.
Rather than seeking complete control, Martin treats material as a collaborator. He provides the brief, and intentionally leaves room for interpretation. The finished works sit somewhere between intention and chance: their form directed by him (as the designer); their character determined through the process of making.

Nathan Martin is a Kaurna/Adelaide based practice that aims to find a medium between sculpture, craft, and functional objects by delving into material experimentation and processes. Embracing unorthodox production methods, Nathan seeks to uncover unexpected visual and sensory outcomes manifested in form and texture. Through the crafting of unique pieces, his experimental and process-driven design ethos celebrates the unconventional, embracing the imperfect and the intricacies of handmade objects.
