‘out of body’ / solo exhibition artist statement.

Lucinda Jones’ 2022 solo exhibition ‘out of body’ brings together a collective moment through self-reflection. A series of paintings, the works depict female forms and organic still life on a background of bright and bold checks created during the Taurus season. Ruled by Venus, the Taurus season invites beauty, strength, love, which Jones captures in her acrylic paintings on raw linen and cotton.

As an earth sign, the works depict earthy, grounding motifs as a process of harmony and balance. Beetroot offers a recurring symbol, revealed in the deep burgundy in the artworks. By avoiding priming her canvases, Jones invites natural texture, returning to organic materiality. In contrast, bold chequered backdrops, evocative of mid-century design, juxtapose the body's natural form.

With the eyes absent in her figures, we are turned towards the gesture; the viewer is invited to imagine what’s not there. Similarly, the ‘still life’ artworks—vegetables and orchids—indicate life beyond the canvas, and the hand gestures reveal a person’s energy.

Jones’ process begins with photography, and each portrait painting holds a personal connection to the women captured. They are intimate moments of friendship, tapping into the strength of feminine Venus energy. The poses of the figures are inspired by the artists’ love of fashion photography—a lifetime of Paris Vogue collecting and contemporary issues of ID and POP.

Repetitively, ‘Out of body’ indicates a personal response, yet Jones seeks a connection and resonates with her audience. While the works are a dialogue with herself, they echo a collective sentiment, one we can all seek out in a grounding aesthetic.
