Ksenia Shinkarenko is a Melbourne-based painter working with natural dyes, plant matter and raw botanical materials on textile. Her practice explores in-between moments through abstract compositions that balance restraint with organic movement.
Born in Russia and shaped by years living in Japan, her practice reflects a deep respect for material integrity and traditional textile processes. Living in Australia deepened her engagement with landscape, light and natural materials, influences that continue to inform her work.
Shinkarenko works across several approaches within the same practice. In some works, natural dye is applied directly onto fabric using brushes and large weighted tools. Atmospheric fields of colour and free-flowing marks emerge through layering, bleeding and absorption. In others, leaves and botanical matter are placed directly onto the surface before the fabric is bundled and steamed. Through heat and time, plant matter transfers its marks into the fibre, colour and pattern migrating in ways that exceed full control.
Both approaches surrender the final outcome to material behaviour and natural processes, allowing the work to carry a sense of aliveness and warmth. Each piece offers a place for the mind to settle.
