‘Fools Stance’
SOLO EXHIBITION BY LUCY ANDERSON
SHOW NOTES;
Fools Stance comes as a renewal of my last show, Fools and Judges. I wanted to
continue the idea with a concentration on the fool and its qualities. These pieces were
born from the fool. A desire to be more bold with my practice. There is a foolishness that
comes with the act of boldness but also holds a very real vulnerability that I hope the
viewer can connect to. This collection embodies that idea.
I have come to realise in my practice that often-excessive layering and intricate mark
making often hide initial fears of not being “good” . The Fools Face for example, is a sort
of self-portrait that almost begs acceptance. It is so unguarded that it could feel
uncomfortable. I had to restrain myself from painting over it and very intentionally left it
in this totally vulnerable and naive state. Not unlike the feeling of your face being
exposed in fluorescent light.
Fools Stance, as a collection, is a gesture towards the act of being vulnerable and bold
at the same time and also the deeper contemplation of the two acts being the essential
quality needed for true creativity and transformation.

SHOW NOTES
The idea of the fool and the judge is always present in my practice. Constantly in flux between the two. A quiet dance of opposites.
I am both the fool and the judge. Both are necessary. Both are agonising. My pieces are personal in nature. I explore notions of faith, practice, rituals and surroundings. Simple and honest in process, I hope to express a playful foolishness in the works that entices the viewer.
