CATALOGUE / ADAM LENG SOLO EXHIBITION ‘BOBBY LOVE’

Meandering lines are signatory to Adam Leng’s work. Always in threes, the first line is for Adam, it shows himself as the individual, the second line represents the land he’s from and is on. The third line is a mindful homage to his ancestors. The lines, Entwined, create a dynastic tapestry that charts a complex connection, spanning generations. They are a way for Adam to understand and establish where he belongs as a proud First Nations man.

Until this body of work, Adam’s deep and allegorical linework was a way for Adam to connect to his past. Now, Bobby Love is a promising look into the future of his family tree, which is evident in a new direction in his practice. Working Collaboratively with ceramicist Fin George to create seven vessels.

With his first daughter on the way, the eponym of Bobby Love. Themes of new life and existence are intrinsic to this body of work. Bringing joy and profound meaning to his life and work.

ARTIST INFORMATION / ADAM LENG

Born and raised on Yugambeh country, you can now find Adam Leng painting away in his home in Tugun, Gold Coast. While his pursuits in multimedia art and music have remained steadfast since he can remember, Leng didn’t pick up acrylic paints until Invasion Day, 2022. Influenced by this profound connection between creativity, culture and politics, Leng’s latest works are inherently tied to past and present.

Hypnotic graphic patterns are woven together in various colour combinations; eucalyptus green and natural, earthy tones give way to busy, dynamic forms that bear resemblance to those of Keith Haring and Reko Rennie. Through his creative process, Leng traces personal histories in meditative maps. ‘The recent bodies of work I’ve produced centre around the idea of unpacking my socio-cultural identity as an Aboriginal person disconnected from ancestor mob,’ he explains. When inspiration runs dry, it’s Country he can rely on and return to time and time again.
